Disney’s “Planes: Fire and Rescue” and “Maleficent” Fly Into Stores This Week!

Disney released two movies over the summer that we had very different expectations for—one, Disney’s Planes: Fire & Rescue was an animated sequel and the other, Maleficent, was a live-action twist on a dark and scary favorite. We were much more excited about the latter, because, wow, did you see the trailer?

Maleficent stars Angelina Jolie and tells the story of Sleeping Beauty from the point of the villain, and things are not always as they seem—unless you think things look magical and fairly scary, then, yes, they are like that. Sorry for the confusion.

The movie Maleficent offers fuel to the old adage “there are two sides to every story” and this one provides a perspective that might just have you changing your sympathies. You have been warned!

The thing about Planes: Fire and & Rescue was that it followed Planes, a movie we never even bothered to watch, something unheard of for our Disney-loving family. It just didn’t look that good to us. It happens.

However, Planes: Fire & Rescue did look good, so we did what any reasonable family would, and that is watch the first movie to get all of the backstory and character details that we assumed we would need for the sequel. Guess what? Planes was wonderful. Who knew?

Planes: Fire & Rescue did not disappoint. The story is full of action, lessons, some pretty dark scares, amazing animation, and music from AC/DC, yes, that AC/DC.

It’s a lot of fun.

And this is where you come in. Both Maleficent and Planes: Fire & Rescue will be released on November 4, 2014, which gives you a myriad of opportunities. There are Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital HD combinations, each with a seemingly endless supply of extras, bonuses, bells, and whistles—hours of Disney magic for the entire family. They both deserve a spot in your movie library.

The hardest part is making the decision between gift and now, namely, are we close enough to the holiday season to purchase Maleficent and Planes: Fire & Rescue as presents or do we buy them to enjoy on family movie night, snuggled warm on the couch and settling in for a long, cold winter?

The answer is yes.

We received Blu-ray/DVD combo copies of each film for review purposes. Opinions are our own.
